Treatments : Dr. Robin Unger’s Spectrum Of Practice

Dr. Robin Unger, a New York hair dr. robin unger new yorkrestoration surgeon, utilizes sophisticated methods in order to help her patients achieve the results they desire.  She is familiar with several techniques, and works with the client in order to find the best fit for their particular situation.  Read her patient’s testimonials!

One popular method is the Unified Tissue Harvest Technique.   In this donor harvest technique, Dr. Robin Unger uses a transfer process to harvest grafts from a donor region of the scalp and move them to a new location.   The Unified Tissue Harvest Technique is very successful, and is the most often utilized method that hair restoration surgeons employ when discussing options with patients.

Robin Unger, MD, of New York, makes sure that her patients understand the process.  She transplants the hair follicles to their new location, allowing them to grow just as they would have from the safe donor portion of the scalp.  The incision is typically a small ellipse section, with the actual width depending on the patient’s particular scalp.  Dr. Unger removes the section with care and precision, insuring that the patient feels safe throughout the entire process.  Sutures are utilized at the end of the surgery, as this provides the patient with a safe and comfortable recovery.  The doctor also ensures that any potential scars are hidden by the newly restored hair follicles, although this scarring is typically the number one disadvantage related to the Unified Tissue Harvest Technique.

Another popular technique employed in New York by Dr. Robin Unger is the Follicular Unit Extraction Technique, or FUE.  FUE demands that the surgeon carefully harvest donor hairs by removing the follicle units directly from the scalp and transferring them to the desired sections of the patient’s scalp.  This method differs from the Unified Tissue Harvest technique in that it the follicular units are extracted from the scalp using a small punch, rather than being produced from via dissection of a larger section of tissue.  It also differs from the aforementioned method in that FUE does not require sutures and is less uncomfortable during the post-operative period.

The decision to use the Unified Tissue Harvest Technique or the Follicular Unit Extraction Technique depends on the patient and his or her scalp.  There are several advantages to using the FUE technique, including small punctuate scars as opposed to a linear one, an easier and shorter healing period, and a decreased amount of limitations following surgery.  Some disadvantages include a decreased amount of permanent hairs involved in the transplantation process, a lower survival rate of the transplanted grafts, a higher level of follicle transection, an increased likelihood of a visible decrease in donor density because of the smaller scars throughout the scalp, and an increase in the amount of time and cost of the procedure.

The advantages of the Unified Tissue Harvest Technique is that the number of most permanent hairs transplanted can be maximized, the survival rate of the grafts is excellent, the number of hairs per graft can be catered to the individual patient, and the very small linear scar makes almost no visual impact on the donor density and is almost invisible except when extremely short hair styles are used. The disadvantages include the linear scar, and the donor area is more uncomfortable post-operatively.

These advantages and disadvantages make the ideal candidate for the FUE surgery a patient who requires a smaller number of grafts, one who has a wide permanent donor fringe of hair, one who may have difficulty healing from hair restoration surgeries, or who prefers to maintain extremely short hairstyles.    The specificity of these two techniques makes them both extremely viable options for all sorts of patients.
